Compare and Contrast

For each link below, you will be shown two chest radiographs to compare. Try to decide what is different between the images, and how this can help you decide between the possible diagnoses.


Further Explanation:

First pair--decide which image shows lung volume loss vs pleural effusion. Realize that BOTH volume loss and effusion cause opacification (whiteness) on the chest radiograph.

Second pair--both patients have CHF, but one has the typical appearance of acute/severe edema with an alveolar pattern, while the other has a subacute/chronic interstitial pattern.

Third pair--both patients have lung opacities, but one is a simple pneumonia while the other has evidence of adenopathy and cavitation, suggesting a more complicated process.
